MX: Dematerialization of Screen Space Reading Response

The most basic premise of the excerpt hits me, as a user and designer, at a very touchy core. We are slaves to the hardware and the ambient spaces that have been created through the development of the camera. The horizontally-biased media that is development for computers and the web is a difficult one to challenge in terms of "breaking the box." This box, a traditional format that has been tested by film standards for more than a century is something that is very familiar in television, computing, and film.

This standard seems to lead web design towards a narrative point of view. The most interesting point of that narrative is the steamlining of UX and experience over multiple platforms. For something to be "good" it has to reject ornament, appeal to minimalism, be simple, and be functional for an overarching user base to accept it. I think that this plainly states where avante garde experience in  the new frontier of the web has to go (ornamental, maximal, loud, non-functional) if it hopes to be truly a new experience. This very simple answer also makes me want to question if the experience of the web and other rectangle-based-platforms truly speaks to message.

The Author addresses my concerns when posing the question "What domestic truths are mirrored in the space of the screen, projected back to us, and beamed elsewhere?" This message, while not only speaking to multi-media-expereience and advertising-centric conceptual development makes me, as a designer question the pre-disposed notions that are expectations of web experience. This faking of interaction, as seen by social media has interesting adverse effects that are starting to be discussed..

Overall, the most important thing to take away from this article, besides the wise advise on the stance of uncharted territory found in our glowing rectangles is, in my opinion, to stay reactive. Which is possibly the most universally helpful advice ever.

Va: Readings Part 2

Design with Intent
We are currently experiencing a change in the way designers are thinking in the world.
Designers want immediate impact. Many designers are hesitant currently.
Questioning user central design. Designing on observed and implied viewpoints.
UCD approach removes designer and promotes creating from a distance.
Designers are encouraged not to impose their views on the experience.
Belief that if we put a lot of effort and focus into the design of an artifact, we can improve the impact and longevity.
UCD is constantly being questioned. Designers are taking roles of direct engagement.

Persuasion Design 
Design without any thought put into influence. Embeds forms of influence and architectures in products and services to promote change in positive ways. Persuasion can seem as if it is full of tricks, but it focuses more on direct outsets and impacts. Starts with results and works backward from there. 

Participatory Design
Change of roles between designer and user. Big use in social media. All designers play roles, but bring community impact into the mix. Actively engage users, without obviously promoting a particular point of view. Change in mindset using social practices. Some designers may choose to internalize themselves as part of a particular community. Participation breeds enthusiasm, action and influence. 
Empathy helps us anticipate the effects of our actions on others and understand the emotions of others who first hand knowledge of experiences.
Design interventions impose change through community usage of a solution. 
Growing awareness of business value associated with working for social change.
Selling a new kind of design approach, particularly to corporate America, is never easy. But design firms have invested a lot of effort over the past few years to increase our influence in the business community. It’s time to use it.

Eco Effectiveness
When we are working toward design solutions, we should consider what will happen with the design in the future. If the design is print, how will the final work interact with the environment when the work has served its purpose. We must consider how it will affect society as a piece of a much larger picture. It's interesting how this article breaks down the parts of a book as an example for sustainable materials and choices for the designer to make. How can digitalizing work help? This is an interesting direction. Not everyone always wants a digital solution, however. 
What might the human built world look like if a cherry tree produced it?
Considering what humans have done to the world and the waste that we have produced. 
Efficient and eco effective buildings and structures may not fully always be the best option, as they may not be as structurally sound. Obviously, common sense comes into play when building efficient structures. 
When designing for a growing world, the key is not to attempt to make the solutions smaller, but is to promote growth and design bigger and better ways to replenish, restore and nourish the world.
Designers should pay more attention to nature services for design solutions and focus on how things happen without the influence of man. These services could help design the most efficient and sustainable solutions to many design problems. Some obvious natural occurrences are unavoidable. However, we can do everything as designers to allow for these occurrences and focus on positive change rather than negative reaction. We need to consider the future and what we will be living in. 

Why Being Less Bad is No Good 
There is and has been a constant view fear for too much population growth. There are constantly questions being asked pertaining to sustainability, less is more, reduction, minimizing, etc. No one quite understands their own ability to wreak lasting destruction on the environment. Many publications have been published concerning these issues. Some use scare tactics and over dramatize situations for impact, while other state the mere truth and are looking for public action. Renewable resources are an important factor. 
Eco-efficiency would be one major method which would transform taking, making and wasting into one which integrates economic, environmental and ethical concerns. Doing more with less was being introduced into the industrial world early on. This idea spread and was adopted by many. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Regulate were four r's which arose from the movement. These views would reduce everything from toxic chemical emissions, work on landfills, reuse air, water and soil to the best of our abilities and many other methods. Essentially, this would help the world in many ways that no one was even aware of. The idea of being efficient was highly promoted. These messages and this type of information should be understood by the masses and should be incorporated into every day design. Rather than only designing with function in mind, these ideals should be obvious go to parts of the design process. 

Human Dignity and Human Rights: Thoughts no the Principles of Human-Centered Design
Designers should consider looking at "form and function" in more of a direction of "form and content". Distinguishing factor of new design thinking. “Towards Critical Autonomy, Or Can Graphic Design Save Itself?”
The debates regarding computer aided design seem nuts considering how much computers are used in the design world now. Moving forward, the article discusses different directions and styles of design moving forward. Some of the innovations are good and some are not so good. Moving into a world of consumerism and design being flat and only for money. This pushed any students learning about design into a solely money driven market. This also pushes future designers away from social issues and primarily into a capitalist mindset. This is where autonomy comes into play and gives a deeper viewpoint on subject matter and what one is truly designing for. A critical examination of not formalism, but expressionism.

Two operative strategies for a designer to sedate/activate consumers

Designer is instrument of consumerism
Messages main goal is to influence choice in client's direction.

Designer is instrument of civil discourse
Allows for citizens to express the point of view of the client. 
Design uses embedded information and does not try to force views on a citizen.

Cultural agency offers a criticism and also offers alternatives.
Surpasses one dimensional viewpoint.

Designer activates/accelerates message, essence and what is said or asked as well as the environment. 
Design should want to convince, but this should be done in a cultural way and allow for critical questions.
The message's recipient should be strongly considered as part of the process.
Diversity, room for debate and contextualizing this information in an interesting and functional way visually. 
The designer's role is shaping a space for interpretation as a catalyst.

Well being of civilization is how citizens respond to situations. 
Designing nature and we are subject to her law/powers.
We need discussion, thinking, strong faculties and to take responsibility for the outcomes of our work.
Critical to reach out to fields outside of design itself.
The future of global design is fully collaborative. Nothing secret anymore.
Shifted human race from utopian to massive change.
Reshaping of the future
The World Resources Inventory
Profound challenges are brought on by innovation as a whole in the world, currently.
Design is changing its place in relation to other things. Design now involves life itself.
New set of questions going along with power.
No warnings of great change ahead.
Integrated thinking across disciplines is a major direction for design.
Obviously observation of current trends is important.
No longer about one designer, one client, one place.

“Catherine Gray on sustainable business”, by Bruce Mau, Massive Change
Blauvelt, Looking Closer Five
The Natural Step is an international research and advisory group.
I found it very interesting how many large corporations and international businesses are considering sustainable alternatives. This is definitely positive for the future in every way and opens a lot of doors for possible design solutions. This means sustainable materials for producing products, but also sustainable transportation of these materials. This also includes sustainable forms of energy along with building materials for the businesses. 
I especially found the Nike information interesting. When brainstorming toward sustainability and innovative solutions, enough ideas are developed for a whole new line of designs. Overall, more companies should follow the lead of The Natural Step and the corporations that they have been working with. This type of mindset would be beneficial for the future for everyone.

“Massive Change” by Jeffrey Sachs
There are surely solutions to these problems which could be developed through design. It makes you wonder in collaboration with other established organizations what could be done for these countries. 
This article has a lot of pretty powerful information. The fact that a lot of this information is not widely broadcast seems extremely wrong. There are possible ways to help the devastation associated with world wide disease and hunger, but more dominant countries focus more on war. The stats concerning the funds which were to be collected for the low income countries definitely makes you consider nation and world wide choices and see what is really important. 
This is not a rejection of function, but a recognition that unless designers grasp the significant content of the products they create, their work will come to little consequence or may even lead to harm in our complex world.
Consideration of human dignity and human rights in the design process.
Often missing in our discussion of design is the connection between practice and ultimate purpose.
Design finds its purpose and true beginnings in the value and constitutional life of a country and its people. 
Human rights in the spectrum of political, economic, social and culture rights. These should be directly affecting  our work as designers. 
Issues surrounding human dignity and human rights produce a new perspective for exploring moral and ethical problems using design.
This view is more specially summarized as human-centered design. This practice is rarely fully practiced and many designers speak only of user-centered design. Usability is of course important, but this does not tie directly back to human-centered design as a fundamental or affirmation of human dignity. 
Designers must fully consider what can be done to support and strengthen the dignity of human beings throughout their lives in many circumstances.

VA: Readings Part 1

He Might Be Giant: Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey's OBEY Giant is open to interpretations. Since the artist's brand was concieved in the early 2000's OBEY has been evolving. Fairey wanted something which could elevate to reach out to regular culture using propaganda (which has been highly successful due to his clothing line.) The open dialogue that OBEY creates allows for a dialogue between the viewer and the artist.
Obey Giant relied heavily in the format of the street, allowing for a democratic display of work while fighting for territory. Shepard once said that, To elevate the mundane to iconic is a constant struggle. 
The point that I think Fairey is most admirable for is his views on discerning your work from others.Essentially, your work must be thought of as a way to stand out from the crowd and make impact rather than blend in. 

Are Humanitarian Designers Imperialists?
Humanitarian design thinking is thought to spread disconnection from places where one designs.

For this format of design to work end users need direct collaboration with the design when it is placed for the design to be beneficial. Without this collaboration the design will be ineffective.

Some of the advice that was listed was to:
Be a citizen first, a designer second.
Make the client part of the design team. Work in their environment and understand their thinking.Humanitarian Design creates creative capital in multiple ways from unsuspecting individuals.
Interaction with residents and business owners in community that you are working with.

Guerrilla Street Postering: Civil Disobedience in Los Angeles
Sometimes a message or point of view may not need a large scale mass media campaign. Street postering leaves out the capitalism aspect of the artwork, but still displays the message to the mass public. (To me often in a way that is much more interesting and engaging than a large scale campaign). Many issues are dealt with via Guerrilla artwork. Some common issues are democracy, global capitalism, the environment and many more. The voice is often one based on satire and propaganda. This is the view of the individual or movement as a whole. This is an effective and efficient way of reaching a lot of people and I feel that the shock factor could often provoke a reaction more more than an average advertisement. 

Design Thinking: A Useful Myth
Essentially, Design thinking is a PR term used to sell the idea that designers have some form of creative insight that isn't powered by anything but our brains. In all reality, it is empathy and taking a broad approach to solve a creative problem. Before something such as a logo is created, you should be understanding what the company stands for as well as what their plans for the future are, these goals will inform your choices. This approach is something that is just a well-planned plan of action for tackling any problem, not just design. 

Good Citizenship: Design as a Social and Political Force
Good Citizenship lines up what was graphically happening to what was happening with the world, essentially saying that graphic designers have a toolset to create change within society. When discussing Reagan Era politics in this article, it is important to remember that the US was fighting the Cold war on multiple fronts, one of those being a cultural war that resulted in government creation of new artwork and also general beautification projects for designers. This was a time where printed artifacts (newspapers) and TV were must-see objects. With the internet dissolving these formats I feel like the amount of "good citizenship" being able to make an impact has dissolved. The economic situation, that lack of spending, the creation of niche group through social media and specialization of the internet has made people less-actionable and more lethargic.

Propaganda and Protest Graphics Since the Sixties
This reading had an interesting take on propaganda and protest graphics. Often when I think of these type of graphics, I think about modern day graffiti, posters, signs and print materials. However, these types of practices date back to as early as Pompeii and the caves at Lascaux. These early graphics were a way of communicating viewpoints and important information to the world. Graphic representations maintained their importance throughout practically every war or time of unrest in the world. This type of information could easily be spread to the masses either from an individual or from a higher power in the country. I also found it especially interesting that in many of the examples that were presented that propaganda was used, it was often probably much more real and true than the news to the masses. I think that this type of advertising for a cause can often be an extremely positive, efficient and affordable form of communication. 

Design of Dissent: Introduction & Interview with Milton Glaser
Positive implication as protest against injustice.

Dissent starts at a grassroots level and then builds into something much stronger. 
The overall basis for this interview is basically discussing different forms of actions taken in different cultures. This may be in the form of visual expression or direct force. Within this type of action, there was always positive reaction contrasted with disagreement and distrust. This can lead to violent dissent. Often, dissent begins out to be peaceful, but the messages depicted often provoke anger from some group of people based on their beliefs. Regardless of this type of action, dissenters care so much about their cause that they often are willing to take these risks to spread their message (Think the 99% protesters.)

Visualizing A Revolution: Emory Douglas and the Black Panther Newspaper 
Basically the Black panther party were trying to end the to end exploitation of working people.

Basic info about the Panther Party:
Black Panthers were founded in Oakland. The three things they were trying to defeat were: Poverty, bad healthcare and lack of education.
1964, 1965 Many blacks killed. Police monitored areas all around America.
Wanted to help people overcome oppression. 
Wanted to get back at SD Policemen who had been harassing.
Promoted organized fights back.
Black Panther newspaper was being spread to the masses.
Ceased production in 1970's.
Huey Newton & Cleaver began many black power movements.
Many more forms of propaganda was spread. 
Unique publishing methods as a weapon of the revolution.
Illustrations served two purposes: showed why a revolution seemed necessary and constructing a mythology for powerful people who felt powerless and victimized. 
Pig icon represented capitalism
Using art and drawing as a form of fighting oppression. Even at a young age. 
Lasting vision of empowerment.
The Black Panther Party really helped let the world know what was happening to African Americans and even to just the general public. Their use of the news letter and other print materials was low budget and gave the country an accurate view of brutality situations, racial disagreements and many other situations. This form of media definitely had a major impact on overall social and racial acceptance.

True Cost Design: Consider ethological and psychological consequences of what they do.
Formula based lifelong true cost. Consider other options that may be better in true cost. 
No way to know true cost of product. 
Subjective view of true cost. Can't just give up, but must learn how to calculate cost.
"Designers do no harm. Estimate true cost of products that we design. This would change thought process of work.
Heavily medicated world. Mass media causing mental disfunction.
Two kinds of products: Nice form. Physical Beauty. Other kind is functional product. 
Pay more attention to functional design. 
Design sustainable, but functional products which pay for themselves.
Less commercial aesthetic is emerging.

In unique position of being able to shape culture of design where we stand .
This interview definitely had a lot of good points and things that I had not fully considered. The true cost information definitely made me stop and consider some of the choices that I have made while working on projects in the past. I think that this also would come into play highly in the industrial side of design, but it also is very relevant in any form of design. I really found the two forms of products interesting. As designers, we should try to strive to develop a functional product rather than just one of beauty. But not only functional. Also sustainable and essentially pays for itself using the true cost design method. Less commercial, aesthetic design. Looking at nature for product design definitely is inspiring and something that more designers should consider. We're in a unique position as designers these days. We may be able to help shape culture of design for the future with these values in mind. 

Graphic Authorship
Critical work primarily.
Books for children 
"Designers must consider themselves authors. Not facilitators."
The designer should have a voice and develop relevant work.
Designers should investigate within the social world.
Design for a higher purpose and take possession for their work using authorship.
Some authors are better at depicting origins and depicting traditional ideas.
Authorship can be as simple as a new sense of responsibility.
Author is the Authority
Rather than glorify and look at how work could develop.
Goal is expression of content rendered in a form to reach a new audience. This method is used by many authors.
Sometimes designers render literal meaning, but not the spirit of the author. It is a difficult task not allowing modern formal trends to affect the traditional media.
Work has physical presentation.
Designers transform and depict content as the physical manifesto of the content.
Designers work as directors.
The meaning of the work is a product of the entire production.
Authorship is only a device for designers to rethink process and expand their methods.

The Designer as Producer
Designers can now fabricate and produce their work much easier.
Prototypes which can produce public discussion and develop business partnership is now possible for the designer.
Internet allows world wide connections without physical world connection.
Innovative marketing is now the norm. New networking allows physical and material to collide.
Designers who can do all sides of work can dominate the marketplace.
Less material goods in the world which are digitalized allow for more of a sustainable product central.
Design entrepreneurs work outside of the main flow of business.
Likely to make use of advanced technology for prototypes and fabrication under small manual costs and production.
Design schools should pay more attention to marketing, management besides just design itself.
Citizens movement configuring new technologies to develop a new realm of material culture.
Ecological Sustainability, health and other worlds need designers to work to create products for needs which have yet to be met.

Politics Please, We're Social Designers
Amplifying Creative Communities research project.
Design for social innovation.
Undermining politics completely.
Finding examples of people who use resources in their lives to promote sharing.
Figuring out ways for new innovations and new promoters.
Less fragile, more permanent in a sense of sustainability 
Key aspect: Designers cannot claim to be originators, but enhancers.
Design expertise can make world systems simpler and easy to be taken on by others.
Expanding design beyond "Designing Stuff"
Do Good Design Imposing superficiality of northerners trying to impose solutions to the south. Design thinking must involve deep immersion. May seem to be imperial. 
Do good only at home.
Being ethical to avoid political positions
One challenge: Taking care of elderly. Prominent situation in the public. 
Being ethical in order to avoid politics is a political position. 
Designers working for social innovation. Save government money and withdraw government from certain purposes. 
Community as the client.
Community based social innovation kick offs by Obama. Better than nothing, but not the direction completely. 
Political designed based social innovation is a step.
Most social innovation is illegal or partly illegal. This demands rewriting particular laws.
I think that the most interesting points in this article revolve around viewing the community as a client rather than just a mass of people. Understanding the needs and what is possible are important. We as designers need to be enhancers of the things that we use all of the time. It is important to be in the environment that we are designing for and it is difficult to have an accurate viewpoint if we have not actually put ourselves in someone else's shoes. Today more than ever, we need to consider what we are designing. Rather than just designing "stuff", it should have a reason. Social innovation is an interesting term. The government has taken initiative to launch social innovation methods. These methods may not necessarily follow all of a designers views on the subject matter, but it is a step in the right direction. Overall, we can not expect to be ethical and consider social innovation methods without politics. This stance is a political position. Instead we must work to form solutions which utilize a healthy balance and understand all viewpoints.

VA: Self Assessment

The process that my group has undergone seemed to stall a little bit towards the middle of the semester. I think that personally I needed some form of schedule to direct what needed to be accomplished. This need of a list has been something that I've explored personally and has been quite successful in my process. 

In regards to my interactions with the group; I think the experimental nature of the interactions with branding were somewhat failed not only on my part but also the entire class. Discussion couldn't be maintained in a structured manner and I think that the formula in which we create as a group needs to be addressed. 

My contributions to the class, in my eye, seem to be above average in the calling. What frustrates me, as of now, is the lack of tangible design work. From working as an intern I know a large majority of the research that is being tackled. by us as students. is provided by professionals specializing in the field. This work has been a rather large hinderance.

Additionally, I don't think the large-scale meeting discussing ideation was necessary for conveying the group's ideas. This reluctance wasn't showed in the presentation which Collin, Anna, Wendy and I revised thoroughly during the process.
